Arthroplasty of the thumb

A hand surgeon is the best person to consult to have your condition evaluated.

Frequent pain at the base of the thumb is usually caused by arthrosis (carpo-metacarpal arthrosis or rhyzarthrosis) and can usually be treated with a protective thumb support (short moulded orthosis) and cortisone infiltrations.

When there is incapacitating pain or cumbersome deformity of the thumb, the answer can be articulation replacement surgery (resection arthroplasty or full prosthesis). This prosthesis is similar to the prostheses of other large articulations, but with additional innovative technology that allows recovering full use of the thumb.
